Hidden Hazards

Material Containing Asbestos (ACM) is much more prevalent in buildings today than most people realize. Asbestos has been known to humans for hundreds of years and has been used heavily in the construction industry since the beginning of the 19th century. Praised for its fire-resistant qualities and the tensile strength of its fibers, ACM has been used for many products from suspended ceiling tile to mastic for flooring. Its unique properties lend asbestos to acoustical and insulating applications as well, making it the most commonly found hazardous substance in construction today. Asbestos fibers are 300 times thinner than human hair making them hard to see even with the best optical microscopes. When airborne, they are a highly carcinogenic contagion being thin enough to penetrate cell walls and are impossible to eradicate once in the body. Proper management, containment and removal of asbestos require rigorous processes and carefully planned execution.
